Open Letter to Chris Dodd of MPAA in Hollywood on getting rid of gun scenes in movies in the future: A MODEST PROPOSAL

PLEASE COMMENT -

http://movies.yahoo.com/news/open-letter-mpaas-chris-dodd-rid-guns-182958658.html

Dear Chris Dodd:

I recently read a news story on TheWrap in which you, as chairman of the MPAA, said Hollywood is ready to participate in a meaningful dialogue about gun violence after the Sandy Hook Massacre in Newtown, Conn.

You are from Connecticut. I am from Massachusetts, originally, although I am now living in Asia, far from the violent gun culture of America.

Mr. Dodd, I grew up on movies. I went to college with people who are now film producers in Hollywood and overseas. I went to college with people who are now famous actors in Hollywood.

I love Hollywood, and I love movies, from "The Ten Commandments," which I saw when I was about 8 years old, to the recent release of that Jean Valjean flick. So I write this letter to you as a friend of Hollywood and with the hope that maybe something can be done to take guns and gun scenes out of future Hollywood movies -- on a voluntary studio basis, of course.

Also read: NRA Wayne LaPierre's Tone-Deaf Performance: From a Parallel Universe

There, I said it. I am serious. I am not Jonathan Swift of yore with a "Modest Proposal" for eating babies to solve the hunger crisis in Ireland. No, I am a modern American man who loves movies, and yet I feel that the time has come to rethink the way we make and show our filmed entertainment.

As you know, Mr. Dodd, the Sandy Hook shootings also sparked calls from your old Senate colleague Jay Rockefeller for stricter regulations to protect children from violent images on television, videogames and other media.

The Wrap quoted you this way: "Those of us in the motion-picture and television industry want to do our part to help America heal. We stand ready to be part of the national conversation."

Mr. Dodd, I live in Asia now. Every night I watch movies on TV here, and in my channel surfing I find plenty of Hollywood movies – and nine out of 10 involve scenes of guns and people firing guns. These movies show a very violent gun culture to the rest of the world. Surely we can find a way to stop this and still make creative, crowd-pleasing flicks. I believe we can. If there is a vision and if there is a will. You must lead the way.

I am calling my citizens' lobby group on this issue SGIH, for Stop Guns in Hollywood.

Can you help?

Sincerely, Dan Bloom Blogger, reporter, movie fan since 1949 -- and even after I die. I hope

Pandering the resumes and PR... Why celebs or wanna bees feel they deserve more political clout. I would rather have seen real people.

If actors are going run this committee, please have Tom Sellack on it. He is a sensible, responsible gun owner.

I am sure this action committee has an specific agenda behind their 'caring' video.

Roy_Munson

You're an ass. Maybe they're concerned about our country and don't want any more children to die

JMK

Of all the STUPID "liberals" out there in the world, HOLLYWOOD "liberals" have to be the worst, so all these celebs "demand" and end huh? What do they think they can do usher in the Second Coming of Christ?? Violence, like poverty and injustice will be with us till the Kingdom comes. Live their lives better, encourage others to live their lives better -- Hey here's an idea! What about them DEMANDING AN INVESTIGATION into prescription psychotropic drugs, another factor in ALL of these shooting sprees? WHY don't we hear them wagging their tongues about THAT? After all ain't "Big Pharma" also "the Man"?

No these IMBECILES cannot get their minds off the GUNS, the GUNS, the GUNS. So if we can only get rid of the guns will VIOLENCE with knives, baseball bats, hammers, rope, steel pipes, or bows and arrows for that matter just be "OK"? What a bunch of morons. The problem is violence (most likely triggered by psychotropic drugs) PERIOD. NOT GUNS. All these idiots want to do is see that the rest of us have no means to defend ourselves. That's good coming from these people who are rich enough to live insulated within their ritzy gated communities.

Roy_Munson

What does their being rich have to do with anything?

Rich people don't want their children to live?

Roy_Munson

So do you not care when there are mass shootings ...because "violence will with us till kingdom comes"?

Right On, Roy!

Right on, Roy -- bless you for being a CONCERNED American!

Hey, also a BIG RIGHT ON to my fellow Hollywood creatives, actors and others of our much-dreaded "Media Elites" using your PUBLIC POPULARITY and LEADERSHIP to propose SANE and REASONABLE gun-control laws, a resumed federal BAN on AUTOMATIC/ASSAULT WEAPONS (there is nothing "sporting" about military-style automatic weapons!) and more vigorous CRIMINAL/MENTAL background checks!

The only advice I'd offer, Roy, is that it takes real PATIENCE trying to propose COMMON-SENSE LEGISLATION to a "dead-ender" like JMK, IMHO.

bluestormrising

Yes, thank you Roy, for changing your name so you "reply" to your self and pat your self on the back. My God...have you no shame? I see you are still insulting everyone you can. Loser!

Roy_Munson

Changing my name? Whatever, dude

Minuteman52

I demand a plan to end illegal drugs and drugs and additives in our food. That would help stop the crazies. The founding fathers put the second amendment in the Constitution to protect US from the oppressive government and leaders. Read your history about Russia and Germany. Take the guns...enslave the people!!!

SissiePooh

If these pampered Hollywood "liberals" want to do something constructive, there are several things they can do... First, how about them demanding a plan to rid our nation's food and water supply of genetically-modified crops, food additives and pesticides which are causing potentially irreparable harm to ourselves and our children?

Second, why don't they demand a plan to end the militarization of our society, and the slavish worship of military might and power, including demanding an halt to the Presidential "kill lists", closing Guantanamo Bay for good, the abolition of the NDAA, and calling for an end to the drone attacks which kill children, women and men in Pakistan and the rest of the Middle East?

And third... why don't these obscenely overpaid, socially insulated and pampered Hollywood "liberals" put their money where their mouths are and publicly pledge to pay higher taxes and engage in community service (away from the insular bubble of Hollywood) to actively address the ingrained inequality -- on the racial, sexual, economic and intellectual levels -- which contributes to the cultural pessimism that leads to despair, hopelessness and gun violence.

Colininla

How about not changing the subject?

SissiePooh

The subject of violence -- and this includes gun violence -- has many roots and in order to deal with the subject adequately and come up with meaningful solutions, you have to tackle the root causes of violence. While dealing with guns is a good start, the cultural environment of violence and cruelty which have become part and parcel of American life will have to be dealt with seriously at some point if we're to break the pattern of righteous outrage over a horrific incident followed by platitudes, hollow promises and a resumption of the status quo.

DJC

Guns in America can be eliminated…

1) If our elected officials had any backbone to forcefully stand up to the gun lobby and legislate a bill that would fundamentally outlaw gun ownership by anyone except law enforcement and the military. This is not the 1800s. The US is a strong and vital democracy. The need of a militia to fight a tyrannical and out of control US government is not a reality in our modern age. If the UK, Japan and other First World "civilized" countries can live without guns in the hands of their citizens, we can. We need to trust our democracy and not be in fear of it. Guns availability is out of control in our society and we must end it now. And like any epidemic, the cure must have many components for it to work.

2) Make giving up your gun not only an act of patriotism but an act of economics. The US economy is in the dumps. The US should pay owners the cost of their guns with no questions asked on their repurchase. The guns can be melted down and and the metal reused for useful purposes. Not just assault rifles but all guns. There is no need for anyone to have them in their possession.

3) The US should outlaw the sale and manufacturing of new guns to citizens. It's a simple statement and yes, a black market will emerge, but this is the first step toward ending the gun population in America. The US should federalize the gun producers and, as they are proposing in Columbia with farmers who grow cocaine, develop a way to move these companies to another industry, virtually shutting down the gun-making industry. The gun industry should be made a pariah, the same way cocaine smugglers and the tobacco industry.

4) If a person wants a gun for shooting practice or hunting, that gun would have to be obtained at a the police station much like taking a book from the library. The gun will have a due date and time for it’s return and a GPS tracking devices on it's constant whereabouts if the gun is not returned at the set time. Also making ammunition very expensive (100 dollars a bullet) would also deter a great many people from easily stockpiling ammo.

These are drastic measures for a gun-free America but we have an epidemic of death in the United States but we have to start somewhere.

realitychecked

Please consult your physician and have him/her up your meds. If you think guns can ever be eliminated in this country you have completely lost touch with reality. You embarrass yourself by even for a moment entertaining the idea of a "gun-free America." But apparently a brain-free America is right here on our doorstep.

DJC's Logic Rocks!

Realitychecked, maybe you should not arrogantly and insultingly dismiss what DJC so loftily wrote of his wishes for a "gun-free America."

All you have to, my Far Right xenophobic "realitycheck" friend, is take a studied LOOK at how "largely" GUN-FREE countries like Great Britain, France, and other European and Asian "advanced, developed nations" DO NOT have even a sizable fraction or anything NEAR a 1-percent rate of gun-related fatalities as the world-leading United States of America (averaging about 12,000 gun fatalities annually...or the equivalent of about five or six 9/11-sized World Trade Center attacks each year here!).

Maybe you should consider a "reality check" of your own by reading some research, books and the Internet to learn more about America's annual gun carnage -- you might become quite enlightened like DJC...hopefully!

bluestormrising

Well ...I see old Roy has changed his name again for more insults. You poor old man.

Roy_Munson

Why do you keep writing I changed my name? Are you under the impression only 1 person in the world is in favor of gun control?

I feel sorry for you

bluestormrising

OMG....I can't believe a sane human would propose the above

drivel. What is wrong with you? Get help.

Kudos to DJC!

Wow, powerfully and eloquently written, DJC! Kudos! But I'm afraid to say it would be a TALL ORDER to get the Far Right Extremist/Historical Revisionists to BELIEVE the Second Amendment was actually written by our Founding Fathers as it pertained to MILITIAS (during the Revolutionary War) having the rights to "BEAR ARMS" -- NOT every gun-toting American civilian! But, hey, NRA deserves credit for spending mega-buck$ distorting and perverting the American Constitution to their gun manufacturing bosses liking!

It does NOT matter to the NRA and other pro-gun lobbie$ that we have one of the greatest, most powerful military forces ever assembled and armed to protect us, because the Far Right Extremists want to be ARMED to the gills to take on all of the other PERCEIVED THREATS (such as Mexico, the ghosts of the Soviet Union, those commie Cubans and the Chinese from launching amphibious invasions on our shores!).

Sadly, for their argument's sake, the NRA and their staunchest supporters of mass-killing AUTOMATIC WEAPONS also simply forget America also has a NUCLEAR deterrent, the CIA and Homeland Security to protect us, too! "We just gotta have those guns to take on the terrorists and foreign threats," like these gun nuts and most extremist elements of the NRA can FIND and ELIMINATE those threats for us! They're very scary, nutty people in the staunchest pro-automatic gun ranks in this country -- and sill very potent, tragic as that is for me to admit.

bluestormrising

Go Roy...go Roy.....(I know you can hear your cheering section in your head, along with the "voices." What a flake!

realitychecked

This type of foolishness and inane "demand" is a perfect example of why the vast majority of people correctly perceive Hollywood as a hotbed of vacuous, irrelevant, useless performing pinheads. Who cares what Paul Rudd, Jamie Foxx, and others demand? Who are they? Why do they assume their celebrity gives them a soapbox? Stick to making horrendous TV shows and unwatchable movies and stop blathering on as if their opinion carries any more weight than anyone else. What a vain and self-absorbed bunch of banal boneheads.

Colininla

Yes, only anonymous malcontents should be able to criticize and voice their opinions.

bluestormrising

You mean like "Roy"? For shame!!

Colininla

Huh?

burnhollywood

Chris rock owns guns. one of his lines from "bigger and blacker" when talking about defending himself is "you've got pecs? I've got techs" and beyonce is married to jay-z who raps about his guns in every other song. what a bunch of overpaid hypocritical windbags

Howie

I'll make Paul Rudd a deal: I'll give up my gun if he agrees to stop acting in movies. This is 40 should be renamed This is Crap. IMO.

Colininla

Seen the film already, have you?

lakawak

I know what we should do! We should pass a law that says that criminals can't have guns! That will solve the problems because we know that criminals always follow the laws.

While we are at it, we should pass laws that say that rapists can't rape. Burglars can't rob houses. car thieves can't steal cars, etc!

spike

Here's your plan, Guys:

BAN PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS WHICH ARE CAUSING ALL THE SENSELESS SCHOOL AND WORKPLACE SHOOTINGS IN THIS COUNTRY.

Very simple plan, but very few people are connecting the dots between Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Newtown, and countless other shootings. None of the shooters had prior histories of violence and all of the shooters were on antidepressants or other psychiatric drugs when they committed homicide and/or suicide.

These drugs are creating homicidal/suicidal maniacs out of people. When is enough, enough, Americans?

This is the hard-to-confront but very well-documented reality, which you can avail yourselves of via Citizens Commission on Human Rights. If Big Pharma can finally confront it (see below: they're getting out of the antidepressant business), then we can confront it too.

Here's a petition that was sent to the White House about this issue:

This petition has been responded to by the White House with a typically, lame, completely sidestepping approach by the person in the Oval Office whom even Clinton calls an amateur. This amateur will do NOTHING to stop the real cause of the school shootings because he's in the pocket of the vested interests which includes the drug companies.

Big Pharma is hemhorraging BILLIONS OF DOLLARS left and right on damage lawsuit settlements related to suicidal and homicidal violence, and other lesser side effects caused by psychiatric drugs, particularly antidepressants. Big Pharma is closing down their psychiatric drug research labs all over the world as these drug companies gobble each other up in mergers.

The two biggest drug companies have stated they are getting out of antidepressant research, have admitted they don't work, etc. When is the rest of the world, particularly the U.S. population, plagued by school and workplace shootings, gonna wake up?

This is the petition below. Put some pressure on these bozos about this issue. Demand a Federal investigation, as this petition did below, to no apparent avail.

WE THE PEOPLE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:

launch a federal investigation in to the relationship between school shootings and psychiatric drugs.

Whereas 22 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs citing effects of hostility, violence homicidal ideas, and dozens of high profile shootings/killings tied to psychiatric drug use;

Whereas at least fourteen recent school shootings were committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 109 wounded and 58 killed;

Between 2004 and 2011, there have been over 11,000 reports to the U.S. FDA’s MedWatch system of psychiatric drug side effects related to violence;

We the people of the United States demand a formal and public investigation into the relationship between the FDA, the Pharmaceutical industry, psychiatric drugs and treatments, and the violent actions of the shooters for the last 20 years.

Prescription drugs do not make you insane or commit mass murder. They are prescribed to alleviate mental illness. If anything, perpetrators of mass killings should be on medication and being closely treated, not being able to access semi automatic weapons.

Your argument is totally backward. It's the bullets that kill people, in this case six year old children, not 'big pharma' or some perceived conspiracy theory.

Get a grip.

bluestormrising

That's great coming from Jamie Fox who is appearing in one of the most blood drenched, raciest films in the past 20 years. He will carry so much weight, I'm sure.

Roy_Munson

So the film is racy? A lot of sex, huh?

Roy_Munson

Another genius who doesn't realize MOVIES AREN'T REAL!!

bluestormrising

This is coming from a person who doesn't realize what world he's in.

Roy_Munson

What does that even mean?

bluestormrising

I rest my case.

Roy_Munson

What's Oak Creek?

bluestormrising

Perhaps it's the name of the "home" you wandered away from, Roy?

Elie

Here's a plan. Arm the good people so that they and the people in their care won't be so vulnerable. And Plan B is to take no advice from elites who have the benefit of armed security.

TONY KAYE

this is tony kaye [ detachment, lake of fire, american history x ] we are adults, we are civilized, this 2012 nearly 2013, we must take responsibility as human beings for our actions, you can not blame religion for war, religious texts are beautiful and incredible, but zealous following with no questioning is wrong, violence in movies is ok as long as it's done in the nature of story and art that is ok, gun control is an issue... much more careful scrutiny of who is allowed to purchase a weapon has to be dealt with meticulous care... ALL GUNS HAVE TO BE RETURNED IMMEDIATELY- MORE MOVIES HAVE TO MADE BY THE STUDIOS ABOUT GREAT COPS, GREAT UPHOLDERS OF THE LAW, EDUCATIONIST WORKS THAT REALLY MAKE PEOPLE THINK, REALLY MAKE PEOPLE THINK, AMERICA IS THE GREATEST AND MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY AND MOST BRILLIANT STORYTELLING AND ADVANCED NATION ON THIS HERE BEAUTIFUL PLANET- IT CAN CAUSE ANYTHING TO HAPPEN- IT'S DAMN EASY- BUT CENSORSHIP OF THE ARTS IS GOING BACKWARDS NOT FORWARDS- HAPPY HOLIDAYS- WAR IS OVER IF YOU WANT IT

Roy_Munson

Hey, didn't you demand to have you're name taken off AMX b/c they wouldn't let you make crazy stupid changes to it?

Chryssy Tintner

Thanks for that, Tony. The massacres and drugs are the end result, not the cause. These are young destroyers, who have killed their own hope long before they extend death to others. We must take responsibility for their lack of will to create and contribute. We must acknowledge our lack of care and support for those with mental health issues when they begin.

In Australia the gun laws were reformed in the early 90s after a massacre where a number of tourists died. You now need a professional permit or a permit for a particular use like hunting, to own a gun. We have not had a massacre since. Of course other weapons can be used, but they tend to be less effective.

Chryssy ROCKS!

Beautifully written and described, Chryssy, and THANK YOU so much for providing examples and REAL context as to how Australia's newer, tougher "gun permit" laws have PREVENTED any further gun-related massacres for the last 20 or so years!

Your testimony stands as a SHINING LIGHT and BEACON for what my fellow American countrymen -- even those in the Far Right Extremist ranks of the pro-gun lobbie$ have done to pervert America's Second Amendment -- should do LEGISLATIVELY on gun-control laws on a forward-basis.

I can't tell what it means when someone from a CIVILIZED ADVANCED NATION similar to the United States providing such positive examples. Bless you!!!!

bluestormrising

Geeeeese Old Roy, but violins behind this and they could use it in

the new Liberace movie. I hope no one get diabetes from reading that.

(lol)

Roy_Munson

If you had a brain, you would realize I made fun of Tony Kaye and the other poster (Chryssy) praised him.

But you still think we're all one person? Jeez, you're insane

mikeo

What are you making fun of Tony Kaye for? His post is sincere and a lot more positive and constructive than some snidey sniping at an important issue.

Time for change for the good, America. World is watching.

Roy_Munson

Already said why

Maybe you should consider a "reality check" of your own by reading some research, books and the Internet to learn more about America's annual gun carnage -- you might become quite enlightened like DJC...hopefully!

Flag as inappropriateHere's your plan, Guys:

Whereas 22 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs citing effects of hostility, violence homicidal ideas, and dozens of high profile shootings/killings tied to psychiatric drug use;

Whereas at least fourteen recent school shootings were committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 109 wounded and 58 killed;

Between 2004 and 2011, there have been over 11,000 reports to the U.S. FDA’s MedWatch system of psychiatric drug side effects related to violence;

We the people of the United States demand a formal and public investigation into the relationship between the FDA, the Pharmaceutical industry, psychiatric drugs and treatments, and the violent actions of the shooters for the last 20 years.

Flag as inappropriateThanks for that, Tony.

Oh god!

Flag as inappropriateOf all the STUPID "liberals" out there in the world, HOLLYWOOD "liberals" have to be the worst, so all these celebs "demand" and end huh?

Flag as inappropriateIf these pampered Hollywood "liberals" want to do something constructive, there are several things they can do...

Flag as inappropriateThe subject of violence -- and this includes gun violence -- has many roots and in order to deal with the subject adequately and come up with meaningful solutions, you have to tackle the root causes of violence. While dealing with guns is a good start, the cultural environment of violence and cruelty which have become part and parcel of American life will have to be dealt with seriously at some point if we're to break the pattern of righteous outrage over a horrific incident followed by platitudes, hollow promises and a resumption of the status quo.

Flag as inappropriateGuns in America can be eliminated…

Flag as inappropriateRealitychecked, maybe you should not arrogantly and insultingly dismiss what DJC so loftily wrote of his wishes for a "gun-free America."

Flag as inappropriateWow, powerfully and eloquently written, DJC!

Who cares what Paul Rudd, Jamie Foxx, and others demand? Who are they? Why do they assume their celebrity gives them a soapbox? Stick to making horrendous TV shows and unwatchable movies and stop blathering on as if their opinion carries any more weight than anyone else. Flag as inappropriateHere's your plan, Guys:

Whereas 22 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs citing effects of hostility, violence homicidal ideas, and dozens of high profile shootings/killings tied to psychiatric drug use;

Whereas at least fourteen recent school shootings were committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 109 wounded and 58 killed;

Between 2004 and 2011, there have been over 11,000 reports to the U.S. FDA’s MedWatch system of psychiatric drug side effects related to violence;

We the people of the United States demand a formal and public investigation into the relationship between the FDA, the Pharmaceutical industry, psychiatric drugs and treatments, and the violent actions of the shooters for the last 20 years.

Created: Dec 14, 2012

Issues: Human Rights, Regulatory Reform

Flag as inappropriatePrescription drugs do not make you insane or commit mass murder.

Get a grip.
